National Theatre - Costume & Set Design Workshops
Set Design
Using play extracts, poetry and creative prompts, my set design workshops cover creative concept development, stage terminology and dynamics, use of colour, shape and scale alongside simple model making.
“I have just spoken to our drama teacher Sarah, she was really positive about the day they had with you. She said the students were really excited and impressed with Emma Tompkins’ workshop.”
Costume and Character
Using the topic of ‘Villains’ this workshop allows students to learn the reasons why a character might dress they way they do through understanding the process of character and costume creation. They transform their ambitious designs into paper costumes, learning practical skills as they go.
“Students commented on how amazing it was to see the backstage workshops, inner workings of the theatre itself and loved the costume making (as did I!)
All staff were outstanding, so helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. It was a fantastic day enjoyed by all students immensely.”
5 Principles of Theatre Design & How to do design on limited budgets
A workshop for teacher and drama practitioners. This workshop focuses on the 5 principles of theatre design and shows through examples and practical exercises the potential of design, with low cost solutions.
Creative Costume Design
This workshop takes classic characters and encourages students to think differently about how they might be designed and realised. The workshop develops creative expression but extends to cover scale, 3D construction and creative problem solving.
